United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Bali

Let me introduce to you the biggest event of the year, the
international juggernaut of climate change conferences, the 2007 United
Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Bali,
Indonesia!
The Summit, taking place from December 3-14, will boast a who’s who
of international negotiation teams. There are expected to be 10,000
players (negotiators) from 198 teams (countries), along with 2500 foreign journalists.
The ultimate goal of the Convention is for virtually the entire world
to design and agree upon an international climate change agreement to
replace the Kyoto Protocol after its tenure ends in 2012. However, as
with any sporting event, the outcome won’t be known until the final
buzzer sounds. Welcome to the mixed-sports-metaphor overview of the
Road to Bali.

Certicell Scores Twice With Famous Un-tethered iPhone

Louisville, KY - Certicell announces that it has secured the winning bid for the curious iPhone that has been famously unlocked from the AT&T network by wiz kid George Hotz. In addition, Certicell announces that it has entered into a consulting arrangement with Mr. Hotz to explore additional engineering solutions for cellular handsets.

During the summer Mr. Hotz developed a process for untethering the iPhone from the AT&T network, to which Apple and AT&T have an exclusive distribution agreement. This process allows the iPhone to work on other GSM compatible networks such as T-Mobile. More important, these phones can be used in Europe where cellular networks are extensively GSM. Along with receiving the famous phone, Certicell has entered into a consulting agreement with Mr. Hotz in order to train its staff on the unlocking process and provide technical support to solve other handset software issues.

According to Mr. Terry Daidone, co-founder of Certicell, "We do not have any plans on the table right now to commercialize Mr. Hotz' discovery. However, we are keenly interested in having Mr. Hotz assist our engineers in developing solutions to other software related challenges including software updating, reflashing and memory elimination of repaired and or refurbished cellular handsets".
About Certicell

Based in Louisville, KY and Hong Kong, CertiCell provides a comprehensive portfolio of products and services that facilitate the acquisition, repair and redeployment of aftermarket mobile phones. These cost-effective solutions ensure that CertiCell customers are able to meet their clients' demanding supply-chain requirements.

Web Content Management System

web content management system is content management system software implemented as a web application used for creating and managing HTML
content. It is used to manage and control a large, dynamic collection
of web material (HTML documents and their associated images). A CMS
facilitates content creation, content control, editing, and many
essential web maintenance functions.

Usually the software provides tools where users with little or no knowledge of programming languages and markup languages can create and manage content with relative ease of use. Most systems use a database to store content, and a presentation layer displays the content to regular website visitors based on a set of templates. Administration and content creation is typically done through the web application, but some CMS may be modified in other ways.

A Content Management System (CMS) differs from website builders like Microsoft FrontPage or Macromedia Dreamweaver.
A CMS allows non-technical users to make changes to an existing website
with little or no training. Web CMS typically require a experienced
coder to set-up and add features, but it is primarily a website maintenance tool for non-technical administrators.

Web content management systems capabilties

A web content management system is a software system used to manage
and control a large, dynamic collection of web material (HTML documents
and their associated images). A CMS facilitates document control,
auditing, editing, and timeline management. A Web CMS provides the
following key features:

Automated templates

Create standard visual templates that can be automatically applied
to new and existing content, creating one central place to change that
look across a group of content on a site.

Easily editable content

Once your content is separate from the visual presentation of your
site, it usually becomes much easier and quicker to edit and
manipulate. Most CMS software include WYSIWYG editing tools allowing non-technical individuals to create and edit content.

Scalable feature sets

Most CMS have plug-ins or modules that can be easily installed to extend an existing site's functionality.

Web standards upgrades

Active CMS solutions usually receive regular updates that include
new feature sets and keep the system up to current web standards.

Workflow management

Workflow is the process of creating cycles of sequential and
parallel tasks that must be accomplished in the CMS. For example, a
content creator submits a story but it's not published on the website until the copy editor cleans it up, and the editor-in-chief approves it.

Document management

CMS solutions may provide a means of managing the life cycle of a
document from initial creation time, through revisions, publication,
archive, and document destruction.

Content Management System

A Content Management System (CMS) is a software system used for content management. This includes computer files, image media, audio files, electronic documents and web content.
The idea behind a CMS is to make these files available inter-office, as
well as over the web. A Content Management System would most often be
used as archival as well. Many companies use a CMS to store files in a
non-proprietary form. Companies using a CMS file share with ease, as
most systems use server based software, even further broadening file
availability. As shown below, many Content Management Systems include a
feature for Web Content, and some have a feature for a "workflow
process."

"Workflow" is the idea of moving an electronic document along for
either approval, or for adding content. Some Content Management Systems
will easily facilitate this process with email notification, and
automated routing. This is ideally a collaborative creation of
documents. A CMS facilitates the organization, control, and publication
of a large body of documents and other content, such as images and multimedia resources.

A web content management system is a content management system with additional features to ease the tasks required to publish web content to web sites.

Web content management systems are often used for storing,
controlling, versioning, and publishing industry-specific documentation
such as news articles, operators' manuals, technical manuals, sales
guides, and marketing brochures. A content management system may
support the following features:

Import and creation of documents and multimedia material

Identification of all key users and their content management roles

The ability to assign roles and responsibilities to different content categories or types.

Definition of the content workflow tasks, often coupled with event
messaging so that content managers are alerted to changes in content.

The ability to track and manage multiple versions of a single instance of content.

The ability to publish the content to a repository to support
access to the content. Increasingly, the repository is an inherent part
of the system, and incorporates enterprise search and retrieval.

Some content management systems allow the textual aspect of content
to be separated to some extent from formatting. For example the CMS may
automatically set default color, fonts, or layout.

In an unusual turn of events, Apple has pre-announced a
wireless video streaming set-top box to be released in Q1 2007 with the
tag line "you can take content to your computer or iPod, but now...
TV." Going by the codeword of iTV, the box looks like a flattened Mac
mini -- apparently it's around half the height -- and features a
built-in power supply, USB 2.0, Ethernet, 802.11 "wireless component
video", optical audio and HDMI ports, plus regular ol' RCA stereo audio
ports. Controllable by the standard Apple remote, the iTV will come
with an updated version of the Front Row interface that shares Front
Row's smooth 3D graphics, but differs in that it has a menu on the
right side of the screen. Apparently it'll work with both iTunes on
both PCs and Macs, and will sell for $299.

The Windows Vista Codename Longhorn

Microsoft started work on their plans for "Longhorn" in May 2001,[7]
prior to the release of Windows XP. It was originally expected to ship
sometime late in 2003 as a minor step between Windows XP (codenamed
"Whistler") and "Blackcomb" (now known as Windows "Vienna").
Gradually, "Longhorn" assimilated many of the important new features
and technologies slated for "Blackcomb," resulting in the release date
being pushed back a few times. Many of Microsoft's developers were also
re-tasked with improving the security of Windows XP.[6] Faced with ongoing delays and concerns about feature creep, Microsoft announced on August 27, 2004
that it was making significant changes. "Longhorn" development
basically started afresh, building on the Windows Server 2003 codebase,
and re-incorporating only the features that would be intended for an
actual operating system release. Some previously announced features,
such as WinFS and NGSCB,
were dropped or postponed, and a new software development methodology
called the "Security Development Lifecycle" was incorporated in an
effort to address concerns with the security of the Windows codebase.[8]

After "Longhorn" was named Windows Vista, an unprecedented beta-test
program was started, which involved hundreds of thousands of volunteers
and companies. In September 2005, Microsoft started releasing regular Community Technology Previews (CTP) to beta testers. The first of these was distributed among 2005 Microsoft Professional Developers Conference attendees, and was subsequently released to Microsoft Beta testers and Microsoft Developer Network
subscribers. The builds that followed incorporated most of the planned
features for the final product, as well as a number of changes to the
user interface, based largely on feedback from beta testers. Windows
Vista was deemed feature-complete with the release of the "February
CTP," released on February 22, 2006,
and much of the remainder of work between that build and the final
release of the product focused on stability, performance, application
and driver compatibility, and documentation. Beta 2, released in late
May, was the first build to be made available to the general public
through Microsoft's Customer Preview Program. It was downloaded by over
five million people. Two release candidates followed in September and
October, both of which were made available to a large number of users.

While Microsoft had originally hoped to have the operating system
available worldwide in time for Christmas 2006, it was announced in
March 2006 that the release date would be pushed back to January 2007,
so as to give the company – and the hardware and software companies
which Microsoft depends on for providing device drivers
– additional time to prepare. Microsoft also argued that some
manufacturers selling PCs via retail said they would not be able to
have Vista machines on sale in time for Christmas, whereas direct PC
suppliers such as Dell would be able to ship Vista almost immediately;
a delay was therefore necessary to create a "level playing field".

Through much of 2006, analysts and bloggers had speculated that
Windows Vista would be delayed further, owing to anti-trust concerns
raised by the European Commission and South Korea, and due to a
perceived lack of progress with the beta releases. However, with the November 8, 2006 announcement of the completion of Windows Vista, Microsoft's most lengthy operating system development project came to an end.

On January 30, 2007, it was released worldwide to the general public,[2] and was made available for purchase and downloading from Microsoft's web site.[3] The release of Windows Vista comes more than five years after the introduction of its predecessor, Windows XP, making it the longest time span between two releases of Windows versions.

According to Microsoft,[4] Windows Vista contains hundreds of new features; some of the most significant include an updated graphical user interface and visual style dubbed Windows Aero, improved searching features, new multimedia creation tools such as Windows DVD Maker,
and completely redesigned networking, audio, print, and display
sub-systems. Vista also aims to increase the level of communication
between machines on a home network using peer-to-peer
technology, making it easier to share files and digital media between
computers and devices. For developers, Vista introduces version 3.0 of
the .NET Framework, which aims to make it significantly easier for developers to write high-quality applications than with the traditional Windows API.

Microsoft's primary stated objective with Vista, however, has been
to improve the state of security in the Windows operating system.[5] One common criticism of Windows XP and its predecessors has been their commonly exploited security vulnerabilities and overall susceptibility to malware, viruses and buffer overflows. In light of this, then Microsoft chairman Bill Gates announced in early 2002 a company-wide 'Trustworthy Computing
initiative' which aims to incorporate security work into every aspect
of software development at the company. Microsoft stated that it
prioritized improving the security of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 above finishing Windows Vista, significantly delaying its completion.[6]

During the course of its development, Vista has been the target of a number of negative assessments by various groups. Criticism of Windows Vista has included protracted development time, more restrictive licensing terms, the inclusion of a number of new Digital Rights Management technologies aimed at restricting the copying of protected digital media, and the usability of new features such as User Account Control.

Google Music Store Would Provide New Revenue Stream

Google is preparing to launch a music downloading service, according to research firm Caris & Company.

Late last week, Google (nasdaq: GOOG - news - people ) met with a group of music industry executives and described the private event as merely for "networking." But Caris analyst Mark Stahlman suspects that Google is getting ready to launch a Music Store to rival
Apple Computer (nasdaq: AAPL - news - people ) iTunes.

"The music industry is broadly unhappy with the fixed pricing and lack of subscription options at the market-leading iTunes Music Store and likely to support alternative services," wrote the analyst in a recent report.

In the company’s recent analyst meeting, Google highlighted plans to broaden its business by expanding into media downloading and localized ad-search.

In addition to the potential Music Store, Google has expanded the availability of its experimental local AdWords to all customers in the U.S., Canada and Britain. Integrated into Google Maps, the service is expected to allow targeting ads based on the user’s location.

Verizon Communications (nyse: VZ - news - people ) has also just announced that it has become an AdWords reseller. According to Stahlman, Google may begin to monetize this service through such partnerships.

The Caris analyst maintained "buy" rating on Google. He continues to project 2006 revenue of just over $10 billion for the company and believes that this could grow to as much as $100 billion in five years.

"Should the revenue streams from these new businesses achieve the success we think possible, it is quite possible that estimates will prove too low," Stahlman said.

The technicians, managers, entrepeneurs and decision-makers responsible are under tremendous pressure to master the skills necessary to build and operate these increasingly complex systems.

The mission of the Asia Pacific Regional Internet Conference on Operational Technologies (APRICOT) is to provide a forum for those key Internet builders in the region to learn from their peers and other leaders in the Internet community from around the world.

Held annually, the ten day long summit consists of seminars, workshops, tutorials, conference sessions, birds-of-a-feather (BOFs), and other forums all with the goal of spreading and sharing the knowledge required to operate the Internet within the Asia Pacific region.

In an attempt to ease the travel burden on attendees, APRICOT is held in conjunction with one of the Asia Pacific Network Information Center's (APNIC) two annual meetings, the winter Asia Pacific Networking Group (APNG) meeting, and meetings of other Asia Pacific Internet organisations.

Wherever possible, APRICOT also attempts to derive synergy by having the meetings close to or back-to-back with other Internet events such as Asia Internet World, ICANN etc.

APRICOT's mission is to develop and advance the skills and understanding necessary to grow a robust Internet infrastructure in the Asia-Pacific region. APRICOT is about bringing the world's top Internet experts together with those who can most benefit from their knowledge.

APRICOT attendees are the key builders of Asia's Internet. Many of the world's best Internet engineers attend APRICOT either to teach, present or do their own human networking.

APRICOT provides its sponsors the chance to participate in a quality, content-rich event with excellent opportunities to target their products and services at the decision-makers in the Asia Pacific Internet community.

APRICOT's primary goal is to provide a vehicle for the transfer of technology and techniques to the Asia and Pacific Rim region. As such, our attendance fees are set below those of the more promotionally orientated conferences and in fact are set to match the fees found at many similar Internet Operator Group meetings.

APRICOT is an activity supported by various Asia Pacific Internet organisations as well as numerous individuals who give freely of their time and talent, and is not a commercial profit making venture. Any surplus funds are rolled over to keep attendance fees low at the next APRICOT event and support outreach activities in the less developed areas of the Asia and Pacific region.

Google PageRank Technology

PageRank is a link analysis algorithm which assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of "measuring" its relative importance within the set. The algorithm may be applied to any collection of entities with reciprocal quotations and references. The numerical weight that it assigns to any given element E is also called the PageRank of E and denoted by PR(E).

PageRank was developed at Stanford University by Larry Page (hence the name Page-Rank[1]) and Sergey Brin as part of a research project about a new kind of search engine. The project started in 1995 and led to a functional prototype, named Google, in 1998. Shortly after, Page and Brin founded Google Inc., the company behind the Google search engine. While just one of many factors which determine the ranking of Google search results, PageRank continues to provide the basis for all of Google's web search tools.[2]

The name PageRank is a trademark of Google.

PageRank uses links as "votes"

Google describes PageRank:[2]

“

PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves "important" weigh more heavily and help to make other pages "important".

”

In other words, a PageRank results from a "ballot" among all the other pages on the World Wide Web about how important a page is. A hyperlink to a page counts as a vote of support. The PageRank of a page is defined recursively and depends on the number and PageRank metric of all pages that link to it ("incoming links"). A page that is linked to by many pages with high PageRank receives a high rank itself. If there are no links to a web page there is no support for that page.

Numerous academic papers concerning PageRank have been published since Page and Brin's original paper[3]. In practice, the PageRank concept has proven to be vulnerable to manipulation, and extensive research has been devoted to identifying falsely inflated PageRank and ways to ignore links from documents with falsely inflated PageRank.

Alternatives to the PageRank algorithm are the HITS algorithm proposed by Jon Kleinberg and the IBM CLEVER project.

Google's "rel=nofollow" proposal

In early 2005, Google implemented a new value, "nofollow", for the rel attribute of HTML link and anchor elements, so that website builders and bloggers can make links that Google will not consider for the purposes of PageRank — they are links that no longer constitute a "vote" in the PageRank system. The nofollow relationship was added in an attempt to help combat spamdexing.

As an example, people could create many message-board posts with links to their website to artificially inflate their PageRank. Now, however, the message-board administrator can modify the code to automatically insert "rel=nofollow" to all hyperlinks in posts, thus preventing PageRank from being affected by those particular posts.
